"Ate G&G the following week after being sorely dissapointed with a meal at "The Chicago Chop House". G&G had a much higher quality steak and the sides were top notch. We too were seated upstairs away from the main dining room but found the service made up for it. Yes, he was old but his game was on par with the best waiters any where and I dine out a lot. So you know, the upstairs dining room is where Frank Sinatra used to hold court and he was a G&G regular while in the Windy City. The place hasn't changed in decades and that is part of its charm. It is expensive and it is an experience like no else. I can see how some could be sour from their experience at G&G as one should be a seasoned diner to savor the entire experience. If you're looking to just "eat at a steak house" G&G is not for you however if your looking to "dine out at a steak house" G&G is tops." - tw posted Tuesday, July 26, 2005
"Yeah it's famous, but it sucks. Bad meat, bad potatoes, bad salad, bad wine, and all at a very high price. I don't know how this place got to be so popular. It was packed with large amounts of large people who seemed to not care too much about the quality, and more about the quantity. " - tk posted Friday, October 22, 2004
"I was out with my wife on a Tuesday evening and decided to give G&G a try. I had been there about 12 years before and had a good experience. Like the other reviewers state, you wait by the bar, but there's no stand for the maitre'd. Actually, if you're not a regular, you have no idea where to go to find the maitre'd. After waiting nearly 15 minutes and NO ONE approached us, I had to walk around the restaurant and get stopped by a snobby wait staff asking where I was going. I asked for the maitre'd and this very gruff man approaches (after speaking sweetly to what appeared to be a regular) and tells me that the wait is minimum 30 minutes. Not a bad wait, so we waited for a table. After an hour I had to track him down again. Meanwhile, other patrons were walking in and getting seated immediately. I should have walked then, but after an hour I was did not want to face another wait somewhere else. We finally were seated and after reviewing the menu, selected the prime rib. Our waiter’s response? “We’re nearly out of the prime rib and are saving what we have left for our VIP guests” VIP guests? I didn’t know that G&G had a separate menu for their two different classes of customers. That is what to expect from G&Gs. If you go there every few weeks and spend a couple of hundred, you are considered a “regular” and get VIP treatment. If you’re a working guy like me and only drop $200 for a special night out once a year, pass on G&G. You have to beg for a table and then get insulted for the privilege of dining at their joint.Oh by the way, we walked out." - MM posted Thursday, July 8, 2004
"Whoever thinks this place sucks should be shot. The veal chops and lamb chops are out of this world, the best I ever had. This place has a ton of hstory and alot of juice. It is not like your typical Ruth Chris or Morton's with some kid waiter who just works there temporarilly until something better comes up. These guys at Gene and Georgetti's have been there for years and this is their life. For those of you who want to sit there like a stick in the mud and be pampered like a little kid stay at those high end chain steakhouses and let the rest of soak in and enjoy the atmosphere of Gene and Georgetti's. Like my mother always said you have to stick with your own kind, you spoiled brats enjoy your bland no juice life." - MC posted Friday, March 7, 2003
"**** Review from local Chicagoan. This restaurant is clearly packing them in on their reputation and marketing. The restaurant's history is very interesting, they have been there since the forties, and the old chicago charm and decor does give you a cozy feeling. Nevertheless, I recommend stopping in only for a drink. Eat a steak somewhere else. If you go there to eat you'll probably experience a very crowded and choatic wait for your table in the main room where the bar is. After the wait, you will be whisked past all of the old Chicago atmoshere, this is where the regulars sit, and brought upstairs to your table in what looks like and feels like a converted bedroom. In all honesty at one time it probably was seeing how the building was a two or three flat at one time. I don't know how you feel about it but when I pay 32-45 dollars for a steak I don't want to feel like I"m eating it as a second class citizen in someone's closet. Which leads us to the next problem. With your 35 dollar steak they are kind enough to give you greasey waffle fries which is what you'd expect at a hot dog stand. No salad and no soup. You can get something else but of course like other big steakhouses it's ala carte. Yes it's true we have allowed these restaurants to brainwash us into believing after we hand over forty dollars for a steak me need to then purchase everything else ala carte. Well, not me. In all fairness I should mention that the service is generally good and and steaks are on par with Gibsons, Ruth Chris, ect. If you still plan on dining there try to do it doing the week and request a table in the main dining room where the bar is. On Friday or Saturday forget it unless you call weeks in advance and even then Their "regulars" will probably get the table as a walk in before you. " - rd posted Wednesday, February 26, 2003
"I'll add my poem/vote to the worst steak in town contingent. Medium rare Came burnt and raw, They took it back And burnt it some moreThe spinach was horrible as well. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone." - js posted Monday, November 4, 2002
"This has got to be the most overrated restaurant in Chicago. The steaks had no flavor, the potatos were shabby, the waiters were old and rude, and the prices are outrageous. Expect to pay about $35 for the lamest steaks in Cook County. We were a party of 7 and the bill was over $400. Needless to say, none of us would ever go back. " - tm posted Monday, August 6, 2001
"at first one might be concerned about this restaurant because it is VERY crowded all the time, and the wait staff looks as if they have been there for fifty years... but just give it a chance. the food is excellent... and the potatoes were great too. who ever claimed that this restaurant 'sucked' obviously has poor taste." - kec posted Saturday, September 30, 2000
"My first time in Chicago someone had recommended Gene & Georgetti's to me so I decided to take 2 colleagues with me who were a bit skeptical about my choice. It doesn't look like much from the outside - but I knew my source was good! We had been to some of the top restaurants in Chicago during that week - but this was by far THE BEST! Yeah - it was crowded - a little noisy but the food was INCREDIBLE! I've recommended it to several clients and they were not disappointed." - jen posted Saturday, May 13, 2000
