"What is with the hype for this place? It's awful! The wait is horrible and the food is not that great either. The only thing it has going for it is its huge portionsIf you want good italian food, try Sunny Italy on Rosemead. This place just plain sucks" - AG

"If you like to go to a restaurant that serves generous portions of average Italian food at reasonable prices all served in a fun, if novel, atmosphere, then this is the place for you. This is a restaurant to take out your family and friends if you have alot of them. This place is not stuffy at all, but tries to be fun. When I was there, the servers were alright, they were not rude. But on a busy night, I can imagine them being ticked though. Certainly this restaurant is refreshing compared to all the many other Italian restaurants in Old Town Pasadena that are well, stuffy and uh overpriced. Overall, I liked this place and considered it a fun dining experience. I am sure people like to compare this place to restaurants in Italy or New York. Well, I am sure those places have better restaurants that serve more "authentic" Italian food. Just give us their addresses and we can all eat there next time we stop over in Italy or New York. But until then, since I live in Pasadena, I am sort of stuck with what restaurants are available here. And, this place is worth a visit." -

"I read the previous reviews and have to say one thing...sorry folks! We are NOT in NY! One thing the East Coast has is GREAT Italian Food and nothing can compare to it. There are, however a few that can hold their own out here in the West. Suprisingly, for a franchised restaurant, Buca is pretty decent. I guess the atmosphere also plays a part in enjoying the place. For California - not bad for Italian. " - JED

"Yes, Its just another chain, and the food is just soso, BUT, did have a good time there. Was dissappointed tho that the one in Campbell,Ca does not really have seating for large groups and felt very crowded while trying to enjoy our meal, There were 7 of us and really packed like sardines" - BJB

"This restaurant is very bold in the way it treats potential customers. They usually do not take reservations, unless you are bringing in a big party. They make you stand in their lobby for 30 minutes even though they have plenty of open tables. You do not go to your table unless you are escorted there by the hostess. Once seated, you wait for another 5-10 minutes for your server to come greet you. You wait another 20 minutes for the food to come. You dig in immediately because by that time you are HUNGRY! Is it worth it? Maybe. If you like big portions priced reasonably with rude or indifferent servers then this is the place for you. Personally I think their pizzas are better than their pastas and entrees. But if you hate crowds, bad service, bitchy front-door hostesses, and waiting, then don't go there. Great place to go with a big group of friends or families. Don't recommend it for a first date. " -

"We've been here a couple of times. First time was great. I think it had to be the company. Because the second time was HORRIBLE!! Why can't the hostess (and I use the term loosely) just be honest about the wait? You can't keep telling new every new arrival "it'll be 20 minutes" when everyone else has been waiting for over an hour. I realize it's a ploy to keep people from leaving and going elsewhere - but as a result, we will never go to this restaurant again! The food is OK, but certainly not worth a wait of nearly 2 hours!!!" - smj

"As you can see, this place caters to the ignorant lemmings who prefer chain restaurants. If you want edible Italian, there are plenty of other eateries in Pasadena that do it better. If you do like this place, you're probably an ignorant hick and should go back to Texas. (Learn some grammar, "JT.")" - FU

"I enjoyed the food the atmosphere and the drinks. Of course it's not"a super authentic Italian diner but then we're not in Italy, For all"those people that keep comparing all our restaurants to those in "New York... Why don't they go back to New york.....Or cook at home". This place doesn't pretend to be a Piece of Italy, it prsents it's "self as a fun place to eat with generous servings." - JT

"I agree with all the people who wrote in saying they didn't like Buca Di Beppo. I ate at the Old Town Pasadena location, and even though I didn't encounter any rude staff, I found the decor gimmicky and overdone, the noise level outrageous, and the food mediocre at best. I was not impressed by the size of the food portions, and the sauce on the pasta marinara was badly in need of some garlic. I also thought the nearly constant interruptions of other diners' meals by waiters singing loud birthday songs was irritating. Maybe some people get off on that kind of hokey, trying desperately to seem really Italian atmosphere, but I found it very phoney and even stereotypical of what an Italian restaurant experience is supposed to be like. Obviously, Bucca Di Beppo's methods are working on the restaurant going public, because droves of people are just clamoring to get inside, though I can't figure out why. Bucca Di Beppo just isn't worth the hype. " - lg

"the absolute worst food I have ever experienced. I had heartburn all night - as did my family. This place is not what it cracks up to be - the hostess is rude and makes you wait even when there are tables available. The waitress didn't get to us for about 20 minutes - and the food was absolutely the worst Italian food I have ever had. Bucca de Beppo - needs to "clean" up its act. If you wanted ambience - FORGET IT!! If you wanted good authentic food - FORGET IT. Do us all a favor and close your doors FOREVER!!!!!!" - jb

"The food was just okay. Nothing special, when I go out to eat I expectsomething tasty. For the money I could have eaten some where alot cheaper and with better flavor. One nice thing is the help was nice. I also ate at the one Santa Monica too and the food there was too spicy! No happy medium." - jk

"Great place. Fun atmosphere and good food. Another great place is Maggiano's in the South Coast Plaza. Best Italian food I've ever had. It's also noisy like Buca." - UY

"As so many others has found out, this is not original Italian gourmet restaurant. It is American Italian, not trying to be anything else. Not identical to New York American Italian, but they are doing a good job. I have been there 5 times now but not because the food so great. It is loud, fun, very relaxed atmosphere and huge servings. Great for partys with 6 friends or more. Here you can buy 5 bottles of wine for $25 or so, and every glas tastes like bad home made, but I recommend the more expensive wine that comes in bottles with a label. It is well worth a visit for a party, but not waiting 2 hours in line for. They sometimes serve free pizza slices while you wait, but if they expect more than 30 minutes to get the table, go somewhere else and come back another day. " - LP

"Buca has very good food, fun atmosphere, and is great for groups of six or more. Sure you have to wait and yes it's noisy and no,it's not Carmines in NY but it stands on it's own as fun place to eat." - LG

"I have studied and traveled to Italy a few times. I have only the south of Italy only once. So I can't really comment on the authenticity of Buca's cuisine. However, the food I had was okay at best. I enjoyed the service and the overhanded decoration. For the best (family style) italian cooking in Southern California, try Maggiano in Crystal Court, near South Coast Plaza. They have the BEST italian food in Southern California. " - jc

(CHECK OUT THE MEN'S RESTROOM AND YOU'LL KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!). MY FAVORITES THERE ARE THE CHICKEN CACCIATORE, THE CALZONE SPECIALS, AND THE TIRAMISU..YUM!! YUM!!! BEST PLACE TO TAKE YOUR LARGE FAMILY AND BIG GROUP OF FRIENDS!!!" - CS

"Don't belive they hype - this is nothing more than a chain restaurant specializing in the bastardization of Italian food. Service is rude, and they have the audacity to refuse any deviations form their limited menu. I am an Italian originally from NY, and I have never been to such a terrible Italian restaurant. And in case you didn't know, this chain was based on the great Carmine's in NYC, and they do a TERRIBLE job of imitating it (right down to the menus on the wall)." - CL

"Overall I like Buca di Beppo's, the food is good and the atmosphere is fun. The meals are served family style, a salad and 3 entrees were enough for the 7 of us. Is it the best Italian restaurant ever? No, but it offers good quality food that is ideal for a gathering of friends or family. Don't go for a quiet night out, do go for a fun night and good food." - SE
