"Yuk. This is twice in a row that I've eaten at the Monrovia chain only because I had a gift card--the second time was because the service was so bad the first time that I complained, and the management gave me another gift card. Macaroni Grill anywhere is a great eatery only if you have very low blood pressure and a lot of screaming kids to feed. They can trash the place (and often do!) and no one will look twice. The food is SO oversalted and overcooked you'll drink water for days after. It's VERY loud (see above 'screaming children' comment). Last time we walked in there was a big "B" on the door for Health Inspection ranking. Don't be fooled! This is a Denny's masquerading as a upscale restaurant. Well, I take that back. Denny's is cheaper and quieter and at least rates an "A" with the Health Inspectors!" - kdk

"Nice service, good pesudo-Italian food, decent prices. You will have to yell to be heard but go anyways, even if the kids at the table near you are throwing noodles in your face. The food is always quality, reliable-- the waiters and servers always good looking. Nice wine selection, for a corporate conglomerate, although they will try to sell you up on everything. You can also get some okay desserts. I hate Cheesecake Factory and like this place. " - GM

"Haven't been to the Macaroni Grill in Pasadena, but the on in Fresno is fabulous. I find it hard to believe the food would be bad. I've always had great food, great service and and an incredible ombience at this restaurant. They even put a whole jug of wine on your table and use the honor system to total how many glasses you've taken in. " - mlm

"Never go back again! Totally Americanized, try-to-be creative. The decor, the ambience and the staffs meet typical chain restaurants standard, if you don't know much about Italian food, have a large party(with kids) and are on budget, this is a perfect place. We went to the one in Tustin. What we remember the most was: we asked for some balsamic vinegar and olive oil for dipping bread, the waiter brought one to our table but had to borrow it after a few minutes. They said they only have one bottle of balsamic vinegar in the entire restaurant! .....and you call yourself an Italian restaurant?!I've always love those "hole in a wall" local joints owned by some random Italian family that have been around for 20-30years, don't know what was I thinking going to Macaroni Grill? My bad." - PO

"Tasty? Yes. But why patronize a place where there is never a chef in the kitchen and the menu is created by comity at corporate headquarters? I agree with KAS above. There are many inexpensive and authentic Italian spots in Pasadena. Gales, mentioned above is great, and owned by the chef. Dino's on Colorado is the quintessential Italian/American restaurant, which has been a fixture in Pasadena for more than 50 years now... I would also add to the list Avanti Cafe and Celestino which are both on Lake Ave. Tre Venezie on green is wonderful!!!If you have small children, then Corporate stuff may be a good choice, bet there are so many great and inexpensive places in Pasadena and it's a down right shame not to try them!" - JOE

"Fake "Italian" restaurant chain. No chef in kitchen... Loud... Please! Ditch the corporate fare and walk into one of the MANY quaint and reasonably priced Italian restaurants in Pasadena that are owned by real people and have a real chef in the kitchen! I recommend Gale's on Fair Oaks and Dino's on Colorado. There are a few more expensive places as well. Look around, you never know what you may find." - KAS

"The food is always excellent and coupled with the elegant but vibrant atmosphere, you can't go wrong for a great dining experience. They have an open kitchen so as soon as you walk in, you'll smell wonderful smells and see the chefs hard at work. The prices are reasonable and considering how nice the atmosphere is, it is really good value. Portions are also decent. Service is good and the wait staff are usually friendly. if you go on a weekend, you might be able to catch their wonderful 'opera style' singer belting out high notes from amongst the tables during dinner. I highly recommend this place esp. for a first date or a romantic night out. Try their Shrimp Portofino and Grilled Salmon served with spinach orzo. Yum!" - AN

"Food was okay, but service was crap. Our 10 minute wait was well over an hour. We stood next to the hostess the whole time and she passed us over twice. Asked the waitress to change the penne pasta for linguini and still got penne pasta. Manager offered to pay for our dinner, but waitress still charged us. Save your money. GO ELSEWHERE! " - UY

"My experience there was excellent. The atmosphere is great. One could hear the opera singer as she walks around. The participation of the cooks is also interesting, they yell and sing at times with the opera singer. I like the idea of being given crayons to write on the white paper they put on top of the table. The food selection is also very good. I disagree with DS in regards to the "Bella Napoli" My friends and I really enjoyed them. They are considered Italian Nachos. We thought they were delicious. "While not typically a huge fan of chain restaurants, I must admit the experience at the Macaroni Grill was quite enjoyable! The place is electric. They offer an atmospere that screams "FUN". A wood burning pizza oven, open kitchens,a strolling opera singer, "honor system" jug wine at each table at a price that make a visit to Mi Piace seem like a trip to the dentist. This place made my kids feel like adults and made us adults feel at home and at ease! They had my son's food out first so that his mother and I could enjoy the wine, the singer and mainly each other.I have since eaten there numerous times and have found it only gets better! The employees are focused and seem to have a lot of passion for the place! (oh... by the way... free and easy parking and happy hour 7 days a week! This place has something for everyone. No Wonder it was voted the #1 casual dining restaurant in the United States! " - Spo

"What a beautiful restaurant, and what a huge disappointment!!! This is a new restaurant on Huntington Drive with fabulous ambiance and a wonderful staff. But the food was awful. Everything was oversalted, so if there was any underlying flavor, you didn't get it. We ordered the "Bella Napoli" appetizer, which sounded like a coldcut platter from the menu description, but when we received it, it was like Italian nachos. Ground beef, canned tomatoes, maybe some other items (who knows?) all mixed in with pasta chips (that's right, pasta chips), and then topped with melted cheese. It was horrible! But the waiter gladly took it back, substituting it with something equally as disastrous. We then ordered pasta, but were quick to find out that everything we ordered was awful. Don't go. There are plenty of other good Italian restaurants to visit." - DS
